In the villages of the Purepecha region (Michoacan, Mexico), the celebration of Corpus Christi is a powerful manifestation of syncretism. It is a complex ritual to thank the generous land for the good harvests of the year and to ask for rain and protection for the new season, as well as the Catholic celebration of the transubstantiation of the body of Christ.

Corpus Christi is of central importance in the ceremonial life of the communities of the P'urhépecha people. It expresses their deep sense of relation with nature. For the P'urhépechas, as for the rest of the cultures of Mesoamerican tradition, nature is a sacred entity.

In the village of Cheran, this bond between divinity and nature is intensely expressed during Corpus, when hundreds of young men build “katarakuas”, which are large structures created with two long and thin trunks that, interlocked, are fixed with strips of wood. They support branches, leaves and flowers (mainly orchids), as well as dozens of honeycombs and wild animals that have been caught in the surrounding forests. The children are integral part of the ceremony. They carry their own katarakua, very often displaying soft or plastic animals.

Wild honeycombs are called “Panales”, thus the men carrying them are “Panaleros"; The katarakuas reach more than three meters in height and they can weight between 60 and 80 kilos.

One of the most anticipated moment is “la bajada de los panaleros”, when the 4 groups of men (one for each neibourhood) carrying their katarakuas all gather, go down hill dancing and laughing, up to the main square in front of the church. The vision of hundreds of dancing “trees”, the screams, the different bands playing, the energy, the joy, are exhilarating.
