The African American Day parade is held each September in Harlem, the busiest of the traditionally African American neighborhoods in New York City.

Founded in 1968, it provides a platform for the African American Community to celebrate its achievements.

It is my favorite parade in New York. It is a vibrant demonstration of unity and culture, with one of the largest cross-sections of participants from dancers, musicians, civil servants, politicians, religious leaders, to fraternities and sororities, marching bands, step dancers, roller skaters…and more.

I personally find this “medley" very poetic, some sort of “Un inventaire à la Prevert”. Jacques Prevert was a French surrealist poet who deliberately mixed objects which had no apparent relationship to one another. From his literary experimentation was born the expression “an inventory of the Prevert” where disjointed ideas are brought together to celebrate the connectivity of the world.
